UP THE HAMMERS FESTIVAL:
Live Report
The hunger for epic metal and above all attention seems to grow in Greece of hour in hour. Finally also the defenders Greek they see rewarded the passion that they spirit with one series of musical initiatives of high level. One of these is sure Up the Hammers Festival, to its first edition, that interesting metallic truths from the underground of all Europe align in billboard some.
They open the dances one of the groups of house, the Sacred Blood that they propose to the already numerous people (it was only the 15:30!) some pieces dall?imminent cd of debut ?The Battle of Thermopylae: the Chronicle?. The power-epic of ours, that it remembers that one very of first Tames some, it is not at all badly in spite of some imprecisione in the vocal lines: in particular Warrior ?s?Song is appraised?, from the Melodic refreain and easy recognizable.
Express change of theater box and is the time of the Assedium, l?only Italian formation to which it comes given the possibility to cover itself of Gloria in earth of Greece: The young  epic metallers resist the theater box very well are with pieces of demo ?Far from the Light?, also the new composition ?March of the Oplitae?, that will be included in their debut album "Rise of?the Warlords" . Special mention for the dowries of the chitarrista Guido and for the vocal test of Luca Cicero, to its intimorito official debut with the band and for null from an important theater box therefore.
Then follows another Greek band,  Strikelight, in whose sound they meet NWOBHM perfectly and heavy the classic. Dressed rigorously from chic rockers of the eighties, ours inflame the public of house with pieces like ?Fake Beliefs?, ?Streets of Glory?, l?autotitolata ?Strikelight? and the cover of the Heavy Load ?Saturday Night?. Optimal, moreover, the test of likeable singer George Stavropoulos.
And? then the time of the true surprise of the theater boxes more ?true? than this period, that is the Powervice Dutch, that they seem to have resuscitato in the great style purest and incontaminato NWOBHM of glorious ?the 80. In the dragging performance we listen to all the tracks of their demo (and I guarantee personally on the pieces yield live like ?Behold the Hand of Glory?, ?Nightstalker? and ?The End is coming?), and also some songs from their upcoming debut cd. Between these the torrential "One by One" has hit me directly.Little indugi because it is the moment For  the belgian Desperation. always remaining nell?within of metal the classic, the band it offers to sounds more atmospheric, culminating discs of a valve leggermente and in mid the autotitolato time that the concert closes, a truly epico piece and of thickness. Regarding the others bands leggermente undertone, even if die and Heroes of Life ?are defended well with? brani ?like Heaven will?. It now touches the Ram Swedes, that they obviously hold faith to the own origins with l?monolitica exhibition and lock out. C?is in fact to introduce new cd ?the Forced Entry?, containing pieces of sure impact like ?Shadowman? and ?Sea of Skulls?, than from the alive one they amplify the own power incredibly. Good because indeed able to respect in all and for all it dictates me of ?the old school?.
Last the two groups in bill are more assert you of the lottery and they do not disappoint the waits sure. They are the 20,30 when on the theater box appear the Malediction French: sin for the inintelligibili (at least for me!) witnesses in language mother, because ours open the concert with three ridden mastodontiche of row (between of they detach that ?Dans but Memories? that the beautifulst Vice Esclave ?du of two? years opened ago), to which they follow in alternation pieces epic of mastodontica solennit? (?Martyr?) and other sfuriate that more classic not Justice can?(Murderous?). They exceed them, even though little, the headliner of the manifestation, the Germans Metal Inquisitor, of which the metallic world seems is itself finally shrewed (will play, even if in an angle, to the next Wacken Open Air). The dances with the titletrack are opened dell?last lp, ?Doomsday for the Heretic?; between other pieces they detach thrash-oriented ?the Restricted Agony? and the arrogant ?Resistance is Futile?. One show indeed optimal, received with grinta from the numerous presents, than suggella with dignity the festival.
That to say, in conclusion? And? difficult to send down, but soon also Greece will exceed to us! To Athens I have seen passion, energy, and a sconfinato love for the metal, all elements that give ours you leave latitano or they do not know completed expressions therefore. The defenders Greek, poor of rich means but of it wants of music show us the way to follow without indugi. We want to once again confirm l?Italy like the cenerentola of the European metal, continuing to complain us of the fact that the concerts not are or are little, but then disertarli on the base of ideological weak people taken of position? It is not never, our preferred kind, therefore, will not make still much road! And then, Up the Hammers!

:headbang:

Up the hammers festival
Saturday, 27 May 2006
Underworld club, Athens, Greece
By Chris Papadakis

Time for some pure Steel on stage with some of the most important new bands of the European Metal scene that grows stronger no matter the mainstream attack of many -non metal at all- bands. Up The Hammers festival in Greece! Let's take a quick look on that magic Metal day & night.

The festival started at about 15:00 and finished after 24:00. Unfortunately the exact moment that I was entering the club Assedium from Italy was performing the last song of their set which was no other than a cover version of Manilla Road's "Necropolis" -they turned it to Acropolis if I am not making a mistake-. I have actually lost the set of the Greek Metallers Sacred Blood and the Italian Epic Metallers Assedium, so I actually can not write anything about those sets except the information I got form other people that were around. My info said that both the band -especially Sacred Blood- gave a very good show.

I have seen Strikelight many times in the past, but every time they hit the stage is like the first one. I am referring to the NWOBHM inspired Greek Metallers that performed after Assedium and they gave one of their strongest shows, playing tracks from their debut album, some new ones and two cover songs of Heavy Load and Picture. Their new drummer was fantastic and both the band and the audience had a great time. You got to see this band on stage -if you still haven't- to realize what kind of energy and passion they deliver with their straight Heavy Metal.

Powervice from Holland hit the stage sometime later and they delivered pure Heavy Metal highly inspired by Iron Maiden. Some pointed that they were one of the festival's better bands on stage. They managed to take the Greek audience by their side and they played stuff from their demo with real passion.

RAM from Sweden carried the spirit of Judas Priest. They had a great image on stage and their appearance after Powervice really set the club on fire. They seemed to enjoy it very much, but to tell you the truth I caught myself a little bored from time to time. On the other hand I am sure that their fans; -or the fans of Judas Priest in general- had a real good time during RAM's set.

The private mini CD of Belgium's Desperation is on the top of my home play list the latest months. Their straight, melodic and dark Heavy Metal is on the top of my musical taste so I was very curious to see how this stuff will be performed on stage. Fortunately my high expectations for this band came true. They played the most of the songs from their mini CD plus some new ones that I haven't heard of before. Especially the last track -specially dedicated to Greg "Heavy Load"- was a dark Epic anthem in the veins of early Manowar. I hope that they will record it someday. With Desperation's appearance I was slowly starting to create my Top-3 list for this night and desperation was on it for sure.

Malediction -that was next- simply ruled on stage. I have written it before and I will repeat it here that -in my opinion- this band is Europe's best Heavy Metal band nowadays. If you do not believe that; you would better check their two albums -and their demo- and you would better catch them on stage. They gave perfect performance enforced by the crystal clear sound and the passion of the band. Actually the only think I did during their set was a crazy head banging so do not ask me about more details. Another slot on my Top-3 list was completed.

Metal Inquisitor closed this Festival in the best way: The Metal one. The Germans -that have lately become popular in the Metal audience of Greece- gave their best on stage. They performed like wild animals playing their musical pieces of steel. Their Accept, meets Saxon, meets Running Wild Heavy Metal was the ideal musical formula to drive the audience in Metal ecstasy. Well my list was completed. So if you ask me about the best band of the night I would for sure point Malediction with Metal Inquisitor and Desperation to follow.

In general we all had a really great time in this festival. Everything was so well organized. It started on time and the time schedule was followed with no delays. The sound was clear, the place was air conditioned and the beer was cheep. Merchandise stands from bands and record shops were well placed around. A big "well done" must go to Manolis Karazeris form Battleroar and the guys of Eat Metal Records that organized the whole thing.

I was happy enough to notice many young faces wearing Metal Inquisitor and other Metal t shirts; on the other hand things will be better if there were some more people to have approached the fest. In total we were about 150-200 people. I hope that the next time -there will be a next time the next year- there will be more people around.

So that was all the first Up The Hammers fest have finished. Let's start to count the days until the day of the next one will arrive. Long live METAL!
