It has been quite a long time since I heard some quality doom metal. Frankly, I feel that the epic/doom metal scene is lacking the popularity and love of the ever growing classic metal/power retro scene. Though there are some of the most amazing bands around (check out some new hot bands such as DOOMOCRACY, WHEEL and GOTHIC STONE), I rarely come across a band that will get my attention. Unfortunately, most bands seem to tangle doom METAL with stoner, and they focus on monotonous repeatitive riffs and trippy atmosphere, something I am quite appalled of. However, from time to time good music appears out of the blue, which is intriguing and unique.
MOURNING MIST is one of those rare bands, and their new album “Amen” is something that will challenge every doom metal listener. The notorious duo appeared a decade
ago and since then they seem to have create a reputation in the underground scene. Eight years after their debut album, they return with “Amen” and another dose of
melancholic occult 80s infused doom metal: from the first seconds of “Ancient ruins” someone can understand that this is not your typical doom band. MOURNING MIST,
blend masterfully, the classic doom sound of CANDLEMASS and TROUBLE with the Italian 70’s paranoia of early DEATH SS, PAUL CHAIN, DARK QUARTERER, BLACK HOLEΒ and a small dose of early 90s heavy/gothic metal like MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST or KATATONIA and SENTENCED. Dont get me wrong, you won’t find catchy gothic hits here, only slow painfull sad doom metal with an ever-pressent occult feeling. Think of GOTHIC STONE with more sinister vocals, chants and howls and a mournful haunting violin sound.
There are no catchy songs, and take note that this is not an “easy listening album”. Instead, it needs the proper space and time in order to be appraised, like an expensive vintage wine. Songs are sort, yet quite intense, provoking and sentimental. The sound and the production are gloomy with an occult vibe as if it is the soundtrack of a lost indie early 80’s Italian horror b-movie gem.
MOURNING MIST have made quite an album, a sound that I rarely come across with a quality that it is hard to find these days. Seek it and experience it.
