I’m not usually a fan of one-man bands or, more accurately, solo projects. That’s why, when I come across one that truly resonates with me, it feels special. DIAMONDS HADDER, led by singer and mastermind John Evermore, is undoubtedly one of my favorites.
DIAMONDS HADDER’s debut album, “Beyond the Breakers”, was independently released in July 2023. It was recorded in an old, abandoned paint factory on the east side of Los Angeles, USA, in the wake of a wildfire and a premonition. The album boasts a nostalgic heavy metal sound, drawing inspiration from iconic bands such as DIO, Ronnie James Dio’s era of RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH, and the early works of SAVATAGE, FATES WARNING, and QUEENSRŸCHE.
Born from a dream envisioned by a man named Mr. Evermore, the album weaves a tale of trials and tribulations – a life lost, followed by grief, hope, and the unyielding resilience of the human spirit. Themes of possession and the arrival of a character named Johnathan Hadder further enhance this quintessential metal saga. It’s a story of redemption and salvation through music, where a vision becomes reality and a dream turns prophetic.
The entire album was written, performed, recorded, and produced by John Evermore and was mastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony Studio in April 2024, for its official release by No Remorse Records.
“Beyond the Breakers” boldly explores the realms of heavy and power metal, blending epic storytelling with intricate musical craftsmanship. Its ambitious compositions and the enigmatic persona of its frontman, John Evermore, make it stand out. His soaring vocals and evocative delivery evoke comparisons to legends like Ronnie James Dio and Geoff Tate.
When the album first appeared on digital platforms, I had the chance to exchange a few words with him. Reflecting on his journey as a solo artist and his dedication to classic heavy metal in contemporary Los Angeles, he shared:
“I’m trapped in my little LA world… Traditional metal in LA is kinda scarce. I feel like an alien in a strange land sometimes. It’s good to know people over the pond appreciate the old sound… like I do.”
John Evermore’s penchant for long-form tracks creates a cinematic listening experience. Each song unfolds like a self-contained journey, abandoning traditional verse-chorus structures for sprawling, dynamic arrangements. Tracks like “Evermore”, which runs over 14 minutes, showcase DIAMONDS HADDER’s ability to craft immersive narratives. With haunting melodies, tempo shifts, and symphonic layers, the album transports listeners to dark, otherworldly realms. Inspired by John Evermore’s introspective journey and artistic vision, the songwriting strikes a balance between deeply personal themes and universal resonance.
The production emphasizes clarity and power, allowing every element to shine – from the searing guitar solos to the hauntingly evocative vocal harmonies.
“Beyond the Breakers” is a testament to DIAMONDS HADDER’s commitment to their place within the metal genre – firmly rooted between a glorious past and an uncertain future. The creator’s choice to remain largely absent from social media adds to their mystique, centering the focus on the music rather than external distractions.
This record is not just music; it’s an odyssey, inviting fans of classic and progressive metal to dive deep and savor its layered brilliance. It demands patience and attention, rewarding listeners with a profoundly emotional and imaginative experience.
“Beyond the Breakers” will be released on November 22nd by No Remorse, on CD and double LP.
