With cover art that feels like a loving tribute to the iconic Kings of Metal, and a title such as Chaos Fire Vengeance, the potential listener is strongly presupposed for what is to follow when the music starts. At least stylistically that is, because there is no way they expect the quality in which that aesthetic is delivered!

Since they formed in 2022, DRAGONSKULL have wanted to play epic/heavy metal and they have long had the EP under the belt that proves it. This, however, is that aspiration brought to the next level.

The album kicks off with Brethren, a track that feels as if a warrior’s battle cry has taken the form of a song. With catchy riffing and definite sing along qualities, the opening song delivers its purpose. It represents the more heavy – power side of the album well, a side also represented by song such as Dragon Riders and Skeleton Hand and, a personal favorite, Nampat.

But alas, that’s not all DRAGONSKULL has to offer. Far from it in fact. Smack bang in the middle of the album War Drums, as well as its previous track, Skull – Crusher, show – off the band’s capability to put the emphasis in the “epic” part of epic heavy metal.  Slower and darker than other parts of their music, the songs ooze atmosphere and otherworldliness.

Put the epicness  of these latter songs together with the heavy – power approach of the earlier mentioned ones, and you have the penultimate song of the album, Shield Maiden. Appropriately named after the legendary female warriors of Viking lore, it delivers on all fronts.

A final special mention has to be made in regards to the closing track. As fantasy fans will recognize, Blood and Souls deals in the universe of the albino emperor of Melniboné. The song fits its theme perfectly. Its nature grand, bombastic and, unsurprisingly, epic. So let your inhibitions go for a moment, and let the music take you on a quest for Tanelorn.

We should also take a moment to discuss the vocals on the album. Ares Labos’ approach results on more rugged, barbaric vocals, that definitely fit this soundscape better than an over -polished high note -heavy approach. Some props are well deserved.

All in all, this is an excellent debut that delivers upon the promises of the band’s EP. It is unapologetically true to its roots, fun but at the same time serious. A great listen for the old school heavy metal fan.

DRAGONSKULL Chaos Fire Vengeance will be released by Eat Metal Records on March 7th 2025.
