It seems that Epic Metal is on the rise nowadays, with tons of new bands arriving each week and sensational new music going on around. This is certainly a very pleasant turn of events however the saturation from the massive production will certainly bring a great lever of corrosion: most bands rarely stray of the shadow of their influences and eventually turn into poor replicas of the leading artist.
BLAZON RITE is among the new acts that seem to have the potential to offer some good music. Their first release is the “Dulce Belllum Inexpertis” EP that contains four songs of epic massiveness.
From the first seconds of “Warrior’s Choice” which reminded me of WITCHFYNDE‘s “Moon Magic” BLAZON RITE unfold a great deal of influences starting from early NWOBHM acts like WITCHFYNDE, CLOVEN HOOF and DEMON to larger acts like IRON MAIDEN (check out the second song “Diamond Daggyr”) and MERCYFUL FATE and last but not least some newer acts like HOLY MARTYR, FROZEN SWORD and BATTLEROAD.
BLAZON RITE seem to have studied their influences quite well since they easy wind from one to another while they try to find a personal style. The songs have a simplistic structure with memorable choruses and some well-known riffs. As I mentioned, while the band doesn’t have a personal style and at sometimes, they seem to rip off themes, they do try to sound unique. I do believe that time and experience will help them achieve that.
The songs are raw and have a primal aggressiveness which adds charm to the whole album, however the whole release sounded to me more like a demo, rather than an official release.
As I already pointed their stuff did remind me of FROZEN SWORD (by the way don’t miss both the albums they have released) or very early LONEWOLF and I should mention that their sound is more European rather than American.
As far as the songs, well the absolute highlight is in here “Diamond Daggyr” which is an absolute killer.
The EP is available on the band’s bandcamp page and there is also a cassette edition available.
To cut a long story this is quite notable release dived into the Epic Metal obscurity. Give the stuff a few listens and you will get into the vibe for sure and yes, keep an eye on BLAZON RITES, for they truly have lots of potential and they could be the next big thing.
