A beautiful, mystical surprise is coming our way from Ancona, Italy, in early March—the debut EP of MAISON DIEU, titled “Herbacea”.
In its 20-minute runtime, “Herbacea” immerses us in the shamanic magic of plants. After a haunting folk introduction, the tracklist guides us through the properties of ivy, calla lily, mandrake, and sage, brewing a mesmerizing blend of psychedelia and doom metal, infused with lyrics inspired by hermetic poetry, myths and legends – a style the band aptly calls “mystic doom”. While I’m usually skeptical of self-promoted genre labels, I must admit that this one fits perfectly.
Carlotta Di Stefano’s vocals are deeply evocative, and the Italian lyrics add a unique tone and authenticity to the songs. Her guitar work is equally impressive, fusing stoner soundscapes and doom riffs with sludge and post-metal elements. Joining her are Mauro Mariotti on backing vocals and bass, and Ivan Natalucci on drums.
MAISON DIEU’s music brings to mind bands like MESSA, SUBROSA, INHERUS, CHELSEA WOLFE, and JEX THOTH. Their sound carries something primal and tribal, yet retains the sheer weight and power of doom – although far removed from the its traditional form.
All the songs were recorded and mixed by Michele Bellagamba at Fleur Bleue Studio.
“Herbacea” will be released on March 4th on all formats -digital, CD and LP- by Sliptrick Records.
