Tanith, alternative spelling of Tanit, an ancient Carthaginian lunar goddess of the Phoenician pantheon.
Of course I don’t know much about ancient Catharge and most of us may recognize only one name; Hannibal Barca. The Carthaginian general Hannibal (247-182 BCE) was one of the greatest military leaders in history. His most famous campaign took place during the Second Punic War (218-202), when he caught the Romans off guard by crossing the Alps.
Anyway our Tanith is a four piece band based in Brooklyn NY including members from Brooklyn and Newcastle, England. With two lead singers blending female and male vocals and twin guitars, they play old school heavy rock influenced by the sounds and imagery of 1970s icons such as Blue Öyster Cult, Wishbone Ash and Uriah Heep. Tanith features the one and only Russ Tippins (well known from his participation on Blind Fury, Pariah and of course the N.W.O.B.H.M. legends Satan) on lead guitar n’ vocals. They self-released their debut single, Citadel’, on November 2017. Metal Blade Records didn’t want more to offer them a contract, so now we are here dealing with their first full length.
You love proto metal then you will adore this one! But there’s more than 70’s heavy rock here. You can here so many beautiful harmonies and N.W.O.B.H.M. elements spread here and there in “In Another Time” that probably will find many similarities to some of your favorites as Iron Maiden or Angel Witch too.
Their warm sound, the mix of dual vocals (Cindy Maynard may not be the best female singer out there but her voice is quite suitable and actually enriches the vocal lines and gives them an extra tense), the tight musicianship, the strong songwriting and the explosive choruses blend with the memorable and brilliant guitars. One of the most interesting albums of the year indeed. Highlights: “Citadel (Galantia Pt. 1)”, “Eleven Years”, “Dionysus” and “Under the Stars (Reprise)”.
