In 1988, RAZOR WHITE from Louisiana, released its self-titled demo, also known as “The Black Demo“. Β The demo, as well as the band’s debut that followed three years later, will be re-released on October 28, 2023.

RAZOR WHITE’s demo is quite heavier than the LP that followed, and sounds like MΓ–TLEY CRÜE of the first album is jamming with FIFTH ANGEL. This is exactly the case in the opening song, β€œNever Cry Wolf”. It is perhaps the band’s best song, and it is a shame that they didn’t write more songs in this style. It is a mid-tempo song, not too fast, but very dynamic with an epic vibe.

The rest of the tracks gradually lose the FIFTH ANGEL reference or the classic metal traits in favor of the early MΓ–TLEY CRÜE / glam metal influences. Β β€œWhat My Eyes Have Seen” is the best of those tracks, and wins over the listener with its catchy chorus. Also, β€œThe Damage Is Done” stands out and even though it is less heavy than the rest of the demo, it’s superb melodies will enthuse a lot of fans.

The Black Demo” is the heaviest side of RAZOR WHITE, compared to the 1991 album, and its songs are mostly for MΓ–TLEY CRÜE fans or for fans of underground bands such as VICE. Generally, this release will be mostly appreciated by the old school glam/sleaze metal fan base, but there are a couple of songs that classic heavy metal listeners will like.

Second opinion:

Oh yes it was about time for this Louisiana classic demo to be reissued. RAZOR WHITE’s first release pretty much reflects what was going on on the overall of the US Metal scene of the time: Heavy Metal was a striking force and at the same time the Glam Metal installment was really huge. Everyone was seeking for a place in the big dream of record deals and packed live shows -not to mention the rest of the rock ‘n’ roll heaven stuff :P-.

So yeah musically there was a big tsunami of bands that tried to match the Heavy Metal sound with the Glam Metal raw and shining vibe. RAZOR WHITE was one of them. And you know what? Their music matters a lot.

Instead of trying to copy the usual formulas of the big bands, RAZOR WHITE actually worked on some magnificent songs that represent an almost unique style. No their influences are not hidden but they are very well presented under originals that rock.

The Lost Realm Records reissue gives you the chance to grab this demo on CD -and the LP is coming soon-. It features remastered sound and some great bonus tracks discovered from the vaults. I know that many Louisiana Steel nerds out there -who do not care about Phil Anselmo being a part on the band’s early days-, were waiting for this one. Now it is your time! – Chris Papadakis
