This compilation, ‘’Demo Anthology (1985-1986)’’ serves as a time capsule, transporting listeners back to the mid ‘80s when American power metal (USPM) was taking shape and all the big names of the genre were releasing or were about to release their everlasting masterpieces.
It brings together the initial demo recordings of SACRED OATH, a band hailing from Bethel, Connecticut (still active to this day) and captures the unbridled energy and fervent creativity of their early years. This collection is not just a ‘’historical document’’ or collector’s item. It is a testament to the enduring vigor of USPM in its rawest form.
The anthology showcases two distinct phases of the band’s initial development. The 1985 demo introduces us to the emerging sound of SACRED OATH, a sound characterized by a robust foundation in traditional heavy metal, but with emerging power metal and thrash metal influences.
In the three tracks of the initial demo, titled ‘’The Ferryman’s Lair’’, ‘’Battle Cry’’ and ‘’Prophecy’’, the band is embracing galloping rhythms, soaring vocals, and twin-guitar harmonies. Even in those early recordings, the ambition and musical prowess of the band were evident. The 1985 demo lineup featured Rob Thorne on vocals and guitar, Pete Altieri on bass and Greg Kallas on drums.
For the history (of the band), it needs to be mentioned that at the time of the 1985 demo, Rob Thorne and Pete Altieri, the founding members of SACRED OATH, were schoolmates at Bethel Highschool and also colleagues in a local burger joint, where they were daydreaming about rock-stardom as they washed dishes.
The 1986 demo, titled ‘’Shadow Out of Time’’ demonstrated a marked progression. The band’s sound has become more defined, with a greater emphasis on speed, intricate arrangements, and a heightened sense of drama. Songs such as ‘’The Ferryman’s Lair’’ (which was also presented in the 1985 demo), ‘’Queen of the Night’’ and ‘’Rising from the Grave’’ exemplify this evolution. The compositions are more elaborate, the musicianship is tighter, and the overall sonic assault is more potent.
Rob Thorne’s vocal delivery exhibits a theatrical quality, adding another layer of intensity to the music. The ‘’Shadow Out of Time’’ demo was recorded with the following lineup: Rob Thorne (Volpintesta) on vocals and guitar, Pete Altieri on guitar, Wayne Christiano on guitar and Kenny Evans on drums.
As a general overview, I would say that the USPM in this anthology is characterized by several key elements. The driving force is the rhythm section, providing a relentless, energetic backbone. The drumming, particularly in the 1986 recordings, is dynamic and propulsive, pushing the songs forward with considerable force. The bass lines provide a solid low-end foundation, locking in with the drums to create a powerful rhythmic drive.
Undoubtfully though, the guitar work is an absolute highlight of the collection. The twin guitars weave intricate melodies and harmonies, often reminiscent of classic IRON MAIDEN of the very early years (Paul Di Anno years) but with a harder and much faster edge. The riffs are forceful and memorable and the lead guitar work is fiery and technically impressive.
The solos are not mere displays of virtuosity. They serve to enhance the emotional impact of the songs, adding layers of excitement and grandeur. As the band themselves have noted, their early sound was also heavily influenced by contemporaries like MERCYFUL FATE and (early) METALLICA, which is evident in the raw energy and dark undertones present in these recordings.
Rob Thorne’s vocals are also a crucial component of SACRED OATH’s sound. His delivery is both powerful and expressive, capable of conveying a range of emotions, from defiant aggression to soaring triumph. His vocal style, with its theatrical flair, adds a unique dimension to the band’s music, setting them apart from some of their contemporaries, providing them a unique personality and identity.
This anthology reveals a very young, at the time, band, but with a clear vision and a great talent to execute it. Even in those early stages, SACRED OATH displayed a remarkable commitment to crafting powerful, dynamic, and memorable metal. The songs are full of energy, passion and a youthful exuberance that is both catching and inspiring.
‘’Demo Anthology 1985-1986’’ is a valuable release, a ‘’document’’ (taken from the original ¼ inch master reels – Rob found the original master reel tapes, so this remastered release sound much better than the cassette rips floating around), for anyone interested in the history of American power metal (USPM). It captures a band on the rise, laying the groundwork for what would follow in their brilliant 1987 full-length album (‘’A Crystal Vision’’).
It’s a reminder of the sheer force and enduring appeal of this style of music, which is, besides Epic Metal, one my two favorite genres, that I could listen to, round the clock, 24 / 7 (365 days a year).
‘’Demo Anthology (1985 – 1986)’’ will be released on the 15th of May 2025 by Stormspell Records and will be available on CD.
