IDMON’S AEGIS is a brand-new band from Athens that was formed a couple of years ago, in 2022, but if someone looks into the line-up closely, will discover immediately that is consisted of experienced members of the Hellenic metal scene and especially with a distinct Epic Metal background.
To give a short Curriculum Vitae about the band, as already mentioned, was formed in 2022 by the guitarist Chris Mosalos (former member in the bands WRATHBLADE, LITANY, RAGING STORM, DEPRESSION). The vocalist Nick Varsamis (current member also in WRATHBLADE, LITANY and former member in MACEDON HARRIERS and SERPENT RIDER) joined shortly after by the bassist Yiannis Tsountaros and drummer Areti Pournara.
That was the line-up that recorded in 2023 the band’s upcoming debut album, which will have the title ‘’ Under the Auspices of Idmon’’. Areti Pournara departed the band the same year (2023) and the band is already working on new material. The 2 songs that are presented in this EP, will be included in the debut album.
So, after the acquaintance with the band and its members has been concluded, let’s focus on the music itself.
First comes the song ‘’Divine Providence’’, that begins with a fast anthemic galloping march that grabs the listener from the neck and throws him instantly into the realm of epicness. Immediately all glorious memories from the most triumphant songs of MANILLA ROAD, early THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG, DOOMSWORD, BROCAS HELM and of course WRATHBLADE, unwrap victoriously.
Varsamis’ voice has a very strong emblematic and imposing tone. He has an astonishing way that he sings or someone would say, with the manner he recites the lyrics musically. The composition itself is so grasping that the headbanging and fist clenching, out of excitement and soaring passion is inevitable.
A brilliant song with pure epic majesty. It’s one of these moments that make you feel uplifting emotional fulfillment, pride and satisfaction for listening to that kind of music.
Next comes the song ‘’Ceryneian Hind’’, which starts with a slow calm chanting, just before another epic hymn unfolds into a parade of a relentless ride, in the empire of ancient ages gone but not forgotten. This eternal splendor will continue to live endlessly in our battle rhymes, in our music.
IDMON’S AEGIS ‘’teach’’ some lessons here. That in order to deliver pure, authentic and utter Epic Metal, a band does not need ornaments and ribbons.
The band first and foremost, for this genre, should have strong will, warrior’s soul and determination, the mentality, the eagerness and the musical / sincere / rough aggressiveness, to stay true and achieve their aims.
I have the strongest impression, that this EP made me feel very enthusiastic about the band and I am really looking forward for the forthcoming debut album of IDMON’S AEGIS.
