In case you missed it a couple of months ago, Ξ attended the listening session of ACHELOUS debut album, simply called “Macedon”. Well the time has arrived and the album is finally out, so I will add some more info.
Even though the listening session is quite detailed IMHO, I didn’t had the chance to listen to the record carefully in the comfort of my living room, so now that the physical copy is at my hands, I did gave it some spins.
The overall impression hasn’t changed: this is a great power/heavy metal album with an epic touch and a nostalgia vibe. No, don’t expect the forced 80’s retro visuals and audio, ACHELOUSΒ music lays quite far from this. They draw a great load of inspiration from the 80’s European scene (especially SCORPIONS and ACCEPT), but they mainly focus on the 90’s teutonic sound. While you listen to the album you will find lots of references to PARAGON, GRAVE DIGGER, REBELLION, and of course, to the Greek metal scene (in case you are familiar with it). The songs are simple to the structure with anthemic choruses and an ongoing epic feeling. I still believe that “Persepolis” is the best song followed by “The Final Day” and “Gaugamela”.
If I had to mention some drawbacks I’d say that the band’s sound could be a little better. Sometimes I feel that it’s a little bit “moody” and the guitars are not in the front, but in the end, let’s not forget that this is a truly underground release.
From my perspective, this album worths every cent you will pay. It is catchy, enjoyable, easy to listen and sincere. This a truly underground release from one of those bands who keep struggling in the obscurity far from the madding crowd…
